Southmere Park and Lake circular walk: 1 mile

This is a circular walk from the bus stop near the Newacres Library. You will see highlights of Southmere Lake.

The walk is about 1 mile (or 1.6km). The walk is mostly flat with some ramps and kissing gates, suitable for people using manual wheelchairs.

The nearest accessible toilets are at the Lakeside Bar.

  • Paved surfaces with the easiest gradients.

Getting to the start of the walk

Abbey Wood is the nearest train station.

Harrow Manorway/Newacres Library is the nearest bus stop (bus routes 229 or 244)

Take the bus from 229 from Abbey Wood Train Station. Go to bus stop C, and catch bus 229 (heading towards Thamesmead), Or bus 244 (towards Queen Elizabeth Hospital). Stop at Newacres Library.

Route segment 1

This route starts from the bus stop on Harrow Manor Way (towards Thamesmead town centre) and opposite Newacres Library. As you leave the bus turn right, and follow the foot path to the end.

You come to a roundabout at the end of Harrow Manor Way. Turn right onto Belvedere Road and walk underneath the flyover. Wheelchair users will need to travel along the road as there are missing dropped curbs on the far side of the bridge.

A short way along you come to a green area on your right. This is where you enter the Lakeside complex. Turn right and walk to the lake at the end.

Turn right and walk straight ahead, keeping the lake on your left.

You come to the end of the lake. Keep walking straight ahead on the pedestrian road.

The pedestrian road ends. You come to a car barrier and bollards. Walk between the bollards and follow the footpath to the right, under the building onto Binsey Walk.

Ahead of you is Newacres Library. Take the left exit and follow the ramp up to the first level.

The ramp comes out at the 1st floor entrance to Newacres Library. Turn left and walk down to the end.

Turn right then first left to walk past shops.

Turn left again at the end of shops.

The path drops down to lake level. Go through the kissing gate and follow the path around to the left.

Following the path around, with the lake on your left, take the ramp up to the 2nd level through the red kissing gate.

At the end you come to another kissing gate. Keep following the path, you need to go around and through bollards. You briefly share the road with park traffic.

The road rises gently. Take the first path on your left and keep going straight ahead to the end of the lake.

You come to the end of the lake. Keep going straight ahead and leave Lakeside Park by the gates ahead of you. You are back on Belvedere Road, turn left and walk back to the roundabout on Harrow Manor Way.

Cross over Harrow Manor Way. Then turn left and go along the right hand side of Harrow Manor Way to reach the bus stop.
