This is a circular walk from Bexley Rd/Avery Hill College bus stops 162 and 286. You will see highlights of Avery Hill Park.

The walk is about 1.1 miles (or 1.8km) over tarmac and grassed woodland.

The nearest accessible toilets are Avery Hill Park.

Route grade

  • Moderate - Using manual wheelchair with support
  • Paved or hard packed earth surface, with some hills to climb. Routes changeable in wet conditions.

Getting to the start of the walk

Avery Hill is the nearest train station.

Bexley Rd/Avery Hill College are the nearest bus stop (bus routes 162 and 286).

Take the bus from Avery Hill Train Station. Go to bus stop D, and catch bus 162 (heading towards Eltham). Stop at Avery Hill College stop.

Route segment 1

The route starts from bus stop AE University of Greenwich on Bexley Road. As you leave the bus turn left, and walk back downhill to the archway.

Go through the archway, you are on Reinickendorf Avenue.

Take the next road on the right, sign posted to the car parks. Take care, there is no footpath here and this is used by cars.

You pass buildings on your left, then car parks on either side of the road. Keep going straight ahead behind the barrier. You enter Avery Park.

You pass a high brick wall on your left. The Pavilion with its glass roof can be seen. Keep going straight ahead until you see buildings in front of you.

You come to an intersection. In front of you is a cafe. Take the path on your right. You pass football pitches on your left and there is a hedgerow on your right. Keep going along the hedgerow.

The road ends. Turn right onto the grass and follow the hedgerow down to the corner.

You come to a red dog bin and rubbish bin on the corner. Turn right and carry on alongside the hedgerow. This leads up and around until you come back down to a trench. Keeping the trench on your right, keep going straight ahead.

You come to a Green Chain finger post. Keep going straight in the direction of Southwood Park with the trench on your right.

You then come to another footbridge over the trench. Turn right and follow alongside the hedgerow all the way down to the end of the park. You are walking towards Avery Hill Road.

You will come to the edge of the park, which brings you next to Avery Hill Road. Turn left at the fork in the path, this leads you back around to Greenwich University.

You pass by the Pavilion.

Follow the path curving to your right, keeping the high brick wall on your right.

You enter Greenwich University between the car parks. Remember to watch out for cars, and keep going straight ahead up the road.

Turn right and go back under the archway. The bus stop is in front of you on the left.
