Elmstead Wood circular walk: 1.25 miles

This is a circular walk from St Keverne road bus stop. You will see highlights of Elmstead Wood.

The walk is about 1.25 miles (or 2km) through rugged woodland paths with clay soil, firm underfoot when dry. The nearest accessible toilets are Elmstead Woods Station, platform 4.

Route grade

  • Moderate - Using manual wheelchair with support
  • Paved or hard packed earth surface, with some hills to climb. Routes changeable in wet conditions.

Getting to the start of the walk

Elmstead Woods is the nearest train station.

St Keverne Rd is the nearest bus stop (bus routes 314).

Take the bus from Elmstead train station. Go to bus stop A, and catch bus 314 (heading towards Eltham). Stop at St Keverne Rd.

Route segment 1

This route starts from bus stop G on Keverne Road. Turn right as you leave the bus and walk back along the footpath. You cross over Old Manor Road.

Keep going straight until you come to motor vehicle barriers. Turn right and enter Elmstead Wood. Keep going straight ahead.

Follow the main path, this bears left.

The high fence on your left ends. There are 3 paths, path 1 follows the fence line away from you, path 2 has finger posts with butterfly symbols, and path 3 can be seen leading to the right. Take the middle path (path 2) and follow the butterfly finger posts.

You come to a fallen tree. Follow the path behind the fallen tree.

Cross over the wooden foot bridge and keep going straight ahead. Ahead of you is another high netting fence. Follow the direction of the butterfly finger posts around the fence line.

Route segment 7

The high netting fence ends. You come to an clearing or intersection. Go straight ahead following the butterfly posts. The path goes downhill gently.

You come to another butterfly finger post next to a large lumpy tree. Follow the path down to the right. The path gets steeper here.

You come out next to the railway line, Green Chain sign post and Grove Park Cemetery. Take the path on your right, keeping Grove Park Cemetery on your left. Travel to the top of the hill.

Grove Park Cemetery ends. On your left is a totem pole carved from a tree. Keep going straight ahead, you pass more carvings on your left.

You come to the Gnome House carving. Follow the butterfly finger post behind the Gnome House.

Follow the path to the left at the next butterfly finger post.

You come back out onto the main path with the fence on the far side. Turn left and walk out to the gates.

Turn left at the gates to get to the bus stops on Keverne Road.
