A. Erith Riverside

During the 19th century, a pier was constructed for river steamers to call at. Behind it stood the Pier Hotel and riverside gardens, whose attractions included a maze and arboretum.

B. St. John The Baptist’s Church

This 12th century church was rebuilt in 1877. Its believed to be on the site of an early Christian church dating from Roman times.

C. Frank’s Park

Formerly Belvedere Park, until the early 1920s, the park was renamed in commemoration of dignitary Mr. Frank Beadle.

D. Ye Olde Leather Bottle

Little remains of the original pub built in 1643. It was first licensed as a home brew beerhouse in 1740 and called ‘The Bottle’, becoming the ‘Leather Bottle’ in 1803 with a full licence. At various times successive landlords have also carried on business as gunsmiths, saddlers and harness makers.

E. Lesnes Abbey Woods

The woods comprise part of a more extensive area of woodland attached to Lesnes Abbey
which once extended as far as Erith. High quality durable wood from sweet chestnut interspersed with oak was used for barrels, furniture and for producing tannin.
The woods host wild daffodils and in the spring bluebells. Details and information on a nature trail and an orienteering course are available from Bexley Council.

F. Lesnes Abbey Fossil Beds

As you climb away from the ruins the area to your left is very rich in fossils and the remains of mammals, reptiles and fish. If you wish to visit the site contact Bexley Council’s Environmental Protection Team.

G. Hurst Pond

Once one of three ponds, this was known as ‘Pine Pool’. ‘Willow Pool’ and ‘Fountain Pool’ have since partially silted up.

H. Bostall Heath

Bostall meaning ‘Woody’ is on top of sand hills with views over the Thames and marshes.
