Green Chain Walk - sections

Section 11: Crystal Palace Park to Nunhead Cemetery

London's first picture gallery, a remarkable museum and a park fit for a queen are among the gems to explore on this section.

Distance: 5.5 miles (2 hours 45 minutes)

Start at Dulwich Park for a shorter four-mile (two-hour) walk to Nunhead Cemetery.

  1. This journey starts from the Green Chain Walk finger post just north of Crystal Palace station. Head towards the National Sports Centre gates and turn right at the next finger post into the park. Carry on along the path until you leave the park at Westwood gate.
  2. Turn right and go over the traffic crossing, then turn left up Westwood Hill. Turn right into Sydenham Hill, then take the next right to follow a small path next to Bluebell Close. Turn left into High Level Drive, then left to go along Vigilant Close, which takes you to the path leading into the woods. Turn left when you reach Wells Park Road.
    • (2a) Or, you can turn right and go over the traffic crossing and then turn right and go along Westwood Hill. Turn left by the bus stop, cross over Longton Ave and go into Sydenham Wells Park. At the opposite end, turn left to go out of the park, and cross over Longton Avenue and walk along Wells Park Road to the top of the hill.
  3. At the junction with Sydenham Hill, cross over Sydenham Hill and turn right. Keep going until you reach Crescent Wood Road, turn left and follow the road past two roads on your left. Then turn left into Sydenham Hill Wood. Follow the path on the left and walk down the steps. Then follow the Green Chain finger posts along the old railway track (the railway is no longer used). Keep going up to reach the gate, this goes through to Cox's Walk footbridge.
  4. If you wish to add an extra part to your journey, you can go to Dulwich Park. You will need to go straight ahead into Cox's Walk (see point 10. Or, if you don't wish to do this, turn right here, cross the bridge and turn left. Turn left again into Lapsewood Walk, until you reach the junction of London Road and Sydenham Hill.
  5. Turn right and cross Sydenham Hill, then turn left to cross over London Road. Turn left and then go into Horniman Gardens. Follow the path and then leave the gardens at the opposite end, turning left into Westwood Park. Follow the road until you reach Langton Rise, turn left and go along this road. Cross over Wood Vale and go into Camberwell Old Cemetery at the gate. Follow the path through to the main gate on Forest Hill Road.
  6. Leave Camberwell Old Cemetery through the main gate. Turn right and cross over Forest Hill Road. Turn right and go along Forest Hill Road until you reach Honor Oak Park (the 3rd road on the left). Go along Honor Oak Park, and head left through the gate leaving the road. Then turn left and go up the steps to One Tree Hill. Continue straight ahead along the path (One Tree Hill) then turn right into Brenchley Gardens (the road).
  7. If you want to miss out the steps you can turn right from the Camberwell Old Cemetery main gate, and cross over Forest Hill Road at Wood Vale. Turn left and then sharp right through the gate into Brenchley Gardens. Follow the path to the end, which is One Tree Hill. Go through the gate into the road (Brenchley Gardens) and cross over at the pedestrian refuge to get back onto the main route.
  8. Go along Brenchley Gardens and follow the next road on the right into Camberwell New Cemetery. Turn left at the end of this road, then turn left at Brockley Way when you leave the cemetery.
  9. Follow Brockley Way, then cross over Athenlay Road and carry on in the same direction along Merttin's Road. When you reach Ivydale Road, cross over and carry on straight ahead into Inverton Road. Take the fourth road on the right and go along Limesford Road.
  10. Follow Limesford Road to Nunhead Cemetery, and go through the gates on the left.
  11. To follow the route to Dulwich Park: Go straight ahead at point 4 into Cox's Walk and keep going until you reach the junction of Lordship Lane and Dulwich Common Road. Turn left and cross the road at the finger post. When you reach Rosebery Gate, turn right into Dulwich Park. At the Park Caf� head left for Dulwich Picture Gallery and link to West Dulwich Station, or go back to point 4 and follow points 5 to 9 to Nunhead Cemetery.
