Section 7: Oxleas Wood to Middle Park (via Avery Hill Park)

Tour the restored Winter Gardens at Avery Hill Park and the hidden delights of a bird sanctuary with its very own icewell!

  1. This journey starts in Eltham Park North, where the routes divide. Follow the path heading left, then straight on through Shepherdleas Wood. The path will bring you back to Rochester Way, then turn right over the railway bridge opposite Falconwood Station.
  2. Turn right and go along Riefield Road and cross over the Rochester Way Relief Road. Follow Riefield Road down the hill. Shortly before the school entrance, turn right between 71a and 73 Riefield Road, a path which widens out into a leafy lane.
  3. Keep going down Gravel Pit Lane to reach Bexley Road. (Heading left along Bexley Road will lead you to Avery Hill Mansion.)
  4. Cross over Bexley Road and follow the path opposite you. It leads through Pippenhall Meadows and around the horse grazing land, and brings you into Avery Hill Park. Follow the marker posts across the grass to reach the Green Chain major signpost.
  5. Keep going straight ahead to follow the marker posts along the edge of the field, and head right to the a narrow footpath between the playing fields. Follow this footpath between the playing fields, it brings you into Sparrows Lane. Carry on along to the end of Sparrows Lane and turn right to follow Avery Hill Road.
  6. Keep going along Avery Hill Road, and across the railway bridge. Then cross over Footscray Road (A211) and carry on straight ahead. You should now be on Southwood Road.
  7. Keep going along Southwood Road, and turn right straight after the public library. This brings you into Southwood Park. Walk through then gardens and turn right, then follow the marker posts around the edge of the playing field, and back to the pavilion. Leave the park by the access road to reach Southwood Road again.
  8. Turn right and go along Southwood Road. Turn right into Parkview Road. Keep going to the end of Parkview Road, this road turns left and meets Green Lane. Cross over Green Lane and go straight ahead along Broad Lawn. Keep going straight ahead and go into Fairy Hill Park. Follow the marker posts, which take you through Fairy Hill Park and onto Crossmead.
  9. Keep going along Crossmead (Mottingham Station is at the end of this road). Then turn right at Court Road. Cross over the railway and turn right into The Tarn. Follow the marker posts around the lake crossing the footbridge. The marker posts take you out of The Tarn by the gate opposite Middle Park Avenue.
  10. Cross over Court Road and walk down Middle Park Avenue. Turn right through the 'kissing gate', just before the allotments. Follow the path leading to the left, through the wildlife area, it brings you through another gate into Middle Park.
